The Best New Travel Blogs Of April 2014

The best new travel blogs awards are a monthly feature here at the HoliDaze, an opportunity to shine the spotlight on some of the best new bloggers out there who deserve more attention then they are currently getting. After all getting noticed is the hardest part of blogging, especially due to the influx of new travel bloggers over the last year or two.

Best New Travel Blogs: Travelling Apples

This is another blog I’ve recently fallen in love with. It follows an Australian family who has decided to spend the next few years living life on the road. Gone are their days of being tourists, now they are travelers! And are bringing their 2-year-old son Jack along for the ride. So far they’ve only been nomadic for a couple of weeks which means we can expect lots more to come in the future. Plus it will be great to see how their perspectives and beliefs — not to mention their writing — evolves as they do.

Perhaps one of the reasons why I like this blog so much is the healthy mentality behind it. Ivana and Gianni quit smoking cigarettes back in 2012 and then in February of 2013 also quit drinking. While I myself am still a firm advocate of drinking while traveling, albeit in moderation and not like some wild gap-year backpacker (sometimes it is the best way to bond with locals and get them to open up), I do admire and respect their stance. Plus they will be visiting some great locations over the next six months, including Borneo (Malaysia), Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Greece.

Ally and Steve’s blog is a refreshing mix of entertaining insight, offbeat humor (see their Wednesday Hump Day series), travel inspiration/advice and great photos. They gave up their life in Australia and are currently traveling around Central America on the hunt for adventures. With no end to their journey in sight, expect plenty more adventures for these two ๐Ÿ™‚

Immediately I could relate to this couple without having met them as I too am a huge fan of motorcycling the world, but most specifically Asia. Their blog and their adventures are only about six months old but I’ve enjoyed what I have read so far. After meeting in Bangkok several years ago and traveling together through Myanmar they moved back to Europe and (surprise, surprise) spent the next two years working and saving up to hit the road again permanently and well my friends, that day has finally come ๐Ÿ™‚

Best New Travel Blogs: Art Weekenders

I love finding cool and interesting art around the world while traveling and this blog is dedicated entirely to that. Pal and Lydian call Amsterdam home but are always on the hunt for intriguing new art, regardless of where in the world it might be. In addition to their interesting articles I also really love their web site design. Leave it to a site focused on artwork to have a stylish and unique web site ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Thank you very much for including us Derek, and just as much for the kind words. As you say, the early days with a new site can be lonely occasionally, so it makes a world of a difference getting a moral boost like this one. It’s very generous of you; we’ve been following this project of yours for a while and got to know some cool blogs thanks to it. It’s an act we can all learn from, thus a tip of the hat to you!

    • Thanks Pal, I appreciate the kind words and support and am more than happy to bestow the same upon you two. Let me know if you ever need anything, I’m always here or on Twitter, where I can be reached pretty much 24/7 — in case you haven’t noticed from how fast I respond to your tweets ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Haha, oh I sure noticed and I sure will remember now… ;-). I just have to learn to stop doing anything before I finished my first coffee in the morning. Especially after a night with a few glasses of vino – but I’m heading over to ” Nomad is Beautiful” now…:-) Thanks again and who knows, one day maybe our paths will cross in real life too.

        • Its not a question of if but rather when. Since I’m not worried about time or money I am always changing my “plans” to coordinate them with other bloggers or Twitter followers. Keep in touch and we’ll definitely cross paths! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Once again Derek, you’ve delivered with another great set of blogs for us to feast our eyes on ๐Ÿ™‚ This time I only recognised 1 of the above so lots for me to appreciate. I’ve now visited everyone (thanks to you) and can endorse your comments.

Kudos to you Derek for the support, promotion and encouragement you give to fellow bloggers.

    • Woo-hoo, only one? Good, that means I’m doing better at discovering new blogs that others have yet to find. I put a lot more time into searching for these (and then reading all through them) than most people probably realize. However I enjoy giving new, worthy bloggers a much-needed boost, especially in this over-saturated market.

    • Thanks Kellie! The idea came about at the end of 2013 when I wanted to run a “best new travel blog of 2013” contest. However I quickly realized that given the influx of new bloggers who are doing great things but have yet to get the attention they deserve, well, selecting one blog wouldn’t cut it. I chose about 8-9 of my favorites and ran the first post in Feb of 2014. Then given the overwhelming amount of feedback and inquiries from new bloggers (not to mention suggestions from other blogging veterans) I decided to turn it into a monthly feature at the HoliDaze.

So far I’m really enjoying meeting all these new bloggers. And hey, this beats doing blogger interviews — which it seems like every blogger and their mother is doing nowadays :/

    • Glad to hear ๐Ÿ™‚ Well lucky you, the cutoff is 12 months so I’ll put ya in the running for the May edition. Looking forward to checking out your blog!

    • Good — if you’ve only heard of one of these five blogs before than that means I’ve found some lesser know ones that need more attention. Thanks for checking them out!
