The Best New Travel Blogs Of June 2014

Ever thought about white-water rafting the Nile, feeding wild hyenas or living with local tribes in the middle of nowhere? Maybe you’ve wondered what the toilets are like in Tajikistan or which cruel African dictator has the most social media followers? Well then these new travel blogs will be perfect for you…enjoy! Inside Other Places

The World — It’s Not Like On The TV

Best New Travel Blogs: Inside Other Places

Graham’s blog might not be up everyone’s alley but I absolutely love it! It’s not all food and beach photos but rather offers a disturbing and often times depressing insight into other places and countries that most travelers never visit. However at least it’s portrayed in a somewhat humorous manner, which in a way almost makes it less dismal…almost. Remember how I mentioned several months back that there is only one blog to which I get email notifications of every new post? Yeah well, this has become number two.

And now, like a swimsuited kid slowly easing into the water, I present to you a tame, humorous, first-timers look at Inside Other Places. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

Best New Travel Blogs: Odd Years Travel

As I’ve always considered myself a bit odd, so needless to say I was attracted to Megan and Craig’s blog from when I first heard of it back in May. After meeting in Bangkok a couple years ago the two of them have been traveling together ever since, working local jobs and living like a local, all while inspiring others to do the same. Why? “These are the lives we always wanted to lead. These are the Odd Years.”

Best New Travel Blogs: Go Chase The Sun

Nikki and Bojan’s blog is a new find for me but one I love very much because of the destinations they write about, which recently have been focused in Africa. The two of them manage to take some great photographs as well, and thankfully they have a clean, efficient blog that puts emphasis on these photos. They also have a photo gallery that features a most extensive selection of their photographs, however as of publication there is only one album: Borneo. (I really hope they expand on this soon, would love to see more of their Africa photos!)

Best New Travel Blogs: Backpackingman

I was recommended this blog by a fellow travel blogger and both of us were impressed by Jonny’s adventures. After over 15 years of traveling he has finally begun blogging and sharing his experiences, and let me just say, I am hooked! He’s done many of the things on my bucket list, such as feeding the wild hyenas of Harar and going sand-boarding in Namibia. All I can say to you Jonny is keep up the great work! ๐Ÿ™‚

Wanderarti

  Where Art And Travel Collide

Best New Travel Blogs: Wanderarti

Lizzie’s blog Wanderarti takes a delightfully different and superbly done approach to traveling and making it all about the art and the artists, not the location. All too often most of the art that travel bloggers write about it street art but that is not that case here. Featuring places I’ve never heard of and profiles on amazing artists from around the world who are inspired by travel, her blog is always a joy to read. More people need to check this one out!

  1. Hey Derek, thanks so much for featuring Wanderarti and for the kind words about it! I also love Graham’s blog – I met him last year and he has some amazing stories, but I haven’t come across the others yet so I’ll enjoy checking those out.

    Have a great day ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Where did you two meet, just randomly or at a blogging event? He and I have only traded msgs once or twice, never really talked, but damn I have a feeling that Graham has some amazing stories to tell. Anyway, was my honor to include Wanderarti. As I’ve said, I really appreciate how you are doing something different (and doing it so well!) keep it up ๐Ÿ™‚

      • We met at a casual blogging event I started up – I actually helped him to set up his blog so it’s really great to see him doing well! Thanks so much, I’m glad you’re enjoying Wanderarti – lots more great stuff still to come! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I have connected with the guys from Odd Years Travel so far, but haven’t heard of other blogs. There are definitely some cool designs out there and also great photography blogs (I fall into that category too)! Well done

    • Not bad, 1 out of 5. Lizzie also said the same thing. That’s good, I don’t want people to start commenting “oh I know 4 of these blogs already…” I’m trying to find blogs that are new to everyone but still awesome. Looking at yours now…love the new logo/watermark, tell your friend well-done ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Thanks Derek for featuring us here! Nikki is going to give me hell regarding the photo albums, she asked me to do those ages ago… Oh well, all the more reason to finally get to it. Looking forward to have a good look at the other guys here!

    • Whoops, sorry for getting you in hot water man. I feel ya though — started a photo gallery of my own last year and never got around to doing much with it (hence the reason it’s not linked to in the menu). Good luck getting that done and best wishes you two, keep up the good work ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Damn! This is a fantastic round-up, Derek. Graham, you have a really interesting blog, I haven’t seen much similar… I love it! And the backpacking man has some of the craziest stories I’ve ever heard, I’m scared to tweet his stuff sometimes because I know my phone will blow up with nonstop retweet notifications. And “These are the odd years,” what a great slogan, everyone secretly identifies with those emotions, it pulls you in, wanting to read more, like some weird voyeurism of sorts that give you hope of self-justification after all these years of feeling odd.

This is really great stuff, I need to spend more time going through these. Please let me know if I can help you guys out in any way. We’re all in it together.

    • I completely agree with everything you just said and am SO HAPPY to hear someone else that thinks this month’s picks are pretty stellar. Graham’s and Jonny’s are definitely my favorites of this month. See, that is exactly why I tipped you off in via blog comment about having found another adventurer that you would approve of. Little did I know the next day I would find yet another. Y’all’s blogs (I’m Texan, I can say that) are truly three of the most entertaining blogs I have read in a long time! So happy to promote y’all and definitely going to find a way to cross paths with you in real life. Hell I only wish my blog was that good! My adventures are not quite as farflung as you three….not yet, at least.

At some point yes, we’ve got to figure out a way to all collaborate together on something colossal.

  5. Hey Derek! Thanks so much for including us in this months best list!! We just crawled out of a week long hiking and camping trip to Glacier National Park and this was great treat to return to civilization to. Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Ahhhh it’s gorgeous up there, isn’t it? And no worries you are most welcome Megan, I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog so far. Keep up the great work and maybe one of these days we’ll cross paths somewhere in the world ๐Ÿ™‚
