A picturesque paradise. This is The Beach. (Yes, that movie was filmed here.) Welcome to Ko Phi Phi in southern Thailand! Located in the Andaman Sea between Phuket and Krabi, the Phi Phi Islands have quickly become a very popular tourist destination in Thailand.
More than 1,000 people visit Koh Phi Phi ever single day.
Prior to the release of The Beach in 2000, only a handful of off the beaten path travelers visited here every year. Now so many people come from halfway around the world to visit here that the increased tourism is causing issues. During high season (October to April) the islands are literally filled to capacity.
Highly recommend visiting during the low season. Although this does come with an increased chance of encountering rain, it also comes with reduced prices and no crazy crowds.
Below is a photo gallery of our journey covering our journey from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands and our time there, plus travel advice on how to get to Ko Phi Phi and ferry times after that 😉
How To Get To Ko Phi Phi
It’s an island, or rather a series of islands, so you’ll need to go by ferry from one of the other nearby tourist destinations. Daily boats can be found at Ao Chalong Pier in Phuket, Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi, or Saladan Pier on Koh Lanta. Regardless of which pier you are at, the first ferry always leaves at 8:30am (and is always the most crowded) and the last ferry at 2:30pm. Please note that during the low season the ferry between Phi Phi and Koh Lanta does not run — passengers between the two islands will have to change ferries at Krabi.
Where To After Ko Phi Phi?
Head back to the mainland and spend a few days relaxing in Krabi. There are countless outdoor activities and nearby sights to explore, plus no shortage of delicious Thai food to savor. It’s a great place to escape the island crowds and better appreciate the peace and solitude of the surrounding nature. Here is a Krabi budget travel guide to help you make the most of your time here using the least of your money 😉
