Even in India, a nation that is flooded with cultural symbolism, history and numerous religious practices, Jaipur stands apart from the others. The city not only reflects the above mentioned practices but also incorporates a rich heritage of architecture, arts and crafts. Nahargarh Fort, perched on the hilltop overlooking Jaipur, is one of the obligatory things to do in Jaipur. No trip to Jaipur is complete without visiting both Nahargarh and the Amber Palace.
Travel Tip: Visit Amber Palace first thing in the morning, rest in the air conditioning during the afternoon heat, and then head up to Nahargarh in the late afternoon to explore the fort and witness the most beautiful sunset in all of India 😉
Nahargarh, which used to guard the Pink City, now overlooks the growth and prosperity of the modern Jaipur. It has seen various chapters of local history, from its construction in 1734 to India’s independence to nowadays and the modern India, yet still it silently observes the growth of the city.
Welcome to Nahargarh Fort
‘Nahargarh’ means ‘Abode of Tigers’
The city of Jaipur, built by Sawai Jai Singh II, was heavily fortified, since the king took a special interest in the security of the area and due to this he began the construction of Nahargarh Fort in the year 1734. The fort is believed to be named after a Mogul Prince and that’s why in certain parts of Nahargarh, the walls are adorned with beautifully painted frescoes depicting the prowess of the Mogul Empire.
View From Nahargarh Fort
The best view in town!
Perched high above the city, Nahargarh boasts wonderful views of Jaipur and the surrounding hills. Evening proves to be the best time to view the city from Nahargarh as you can see the beautiful city in the day, have a wonderful sunset view, and then gaze over the city at night. The city looks like a treasure chest with lots of necklaces and diamonds scattered all over it. It also gives an amazing view of the Jal Mahal (better known as the Water Palace). Not to be missed when in Jaipur!
Watch The Sunset At Nahargarh Fort
#1 thing to do in Jaipur!
The fort opens at 10am and stops letting people in at 5:30pm, shortly before sunset. Arrive around 3pm for time to explore the inside of the fort and surrounding grounds. Afterward grab yourself a table with a good sunset view, order some food and/or beer from the restaurant, and relax while the sun dips lower and lower.
How To Get To Nahargarh Fort
Getting up there is half the fun!
Visiting Nahargarh requires a 6-kilometre trip up the narrow, winding Nahargarh Road, full of switchbacks, steep drops and scenic views of the city. Drive slowly and wary of vehicles coming down (fast) — or hire your own transportation up top and don’t worry about anything but getting great photos 😉 Taxis regularly take people here and go all the way to the top. There is even a shuttle service available instead for budget travelers.
Nahargarh Fort entry fee for foreigners: 200 INR
+ 50 INR camera fee and extra for food/drinks

Another great article Vijay. Sounds like an interesting mix of history and a quickly evolving modern city.
